Well, St Elmo Steakhouse is OK. The food was acceptable, with reservations. The wine list was suitable, though very light on half-bottles, and the wine service needs plenty of work. The service was good, though a little hurried. The atmosphere was the biggest drawback. The tables are far too small and are very close together. The noise level is deafening, but that may have been in part to three tables of very, very loud diners. The dining area was poorly lit, and I had to rely on the small table candle for all reading.

The shrimp cocktail was highlighted as a specialty and was duly noted as “spicy” on the menu. The horseradish sauce was spicy, but not unlike what I encounter when dining in New Orleans. Unlike New Orleans, the shrimp were mealy and had obviously been frozen for quite a while. This is just not acceptable for a “signature” dish, even if it’s a $12.00 appetizer. Most of the diners had beef, which was done per order, and all agreed, was quite tasty. The Gulf prawns entré was not so fortunate and was closer to the shrimp cocktail.

Regardless of the Wine Spectator rating, needs work. Glassware was substandard and there was no decanting for an older CA Cab. Half-bottle selection was light.

The pricing was average for this level of restaurant. The overall experience was satisfactory, with reservations. When it comes to “steak houses,” I’d opt for Brooks, Del Frisco’s, The Capital Grill, or Rainwater’s on Kettner. If I was the sommelier, I’d discard all of the existing glasses and opt of Spieglau or Riedel glasses, appropriate to the wines on the list. Decanting would certainly be an option and even a recommendation where appropriate.

The lighting needs to be upgraded, as well as the size of tables and their spacing improved.
